Peter Robinson is one of Northern Ireland's best known and most highly respected Unionist leaders. He was the Member of Parliament for East Belfast for 31 years. Peter was the youngest MP in the United Kingdom when he was elected in 1979. No other MP in the history of Parliamentary democracy served the constituency for as long a period.
Peter Robinson has been the voice of unionism in East Belfast and indeed for the wider unionist community for many years and has been instrumental and key in the present unionist revival which has come as a result of DUP leadership and strategy. While the UUP under David Trimble and Reg Empey caved into Sinn Fein/IRA Peter Robinson consistently refused to yield to the IRA's terms and stood out as one of the few who warned of the ploy to develop the Republican Agenda through the Belfast Agreement. In the years that followed he charted a course to lead unionism from the crisis the UUP had generated onto firmer ground.
Peter is without doubt one of the longest-serving and most respected politicians in the UK. He is the Leader of the Democratic Unionist Party, the largest political party in Northern Ireland, and is the First Minister of Northern Ireland. Peter previously was Minister for Regional Development and Minister for Finance and Personnel. He is a Freeman of the Borough of Castlereagh Borough Council where he served for 30 years as a local Councillor.
